How Time Conversion Works

Time conversion starts by identifying the source, applying the right rule, and displaying a target format that matches the use case.

1

Identify the Source Format

Determine whether the input uses local time, UTC, a timezone abbreviation, 12-hour time, 24-hour time, or a timestamp.

2

Apply the Correct Rule

Convert the source using timezone offsets, formatting rules, timestamp calculations, or tool-specific logic.

3

Display the Target Format

Show the result in the requested timezone, notation, or technical format with clear labels.

12-hour versus 24-hour time

12-hour time uses AM and PM. 24-hour time counts from 00:00 through 23:59.

UTC and GMT

UTC is the modern global time standard. GMT is a time reference often used similarly in everyday contexts.

Unix and Epoch timestamps

Unix Time = Seconds Since 1 January 1970 UTC

Timezone offsets

Local Time = UTC Time + Applicable UTC Offset

Daylight-saving time

Daylight-saving rules may change the applicable offset for a place on a specific date.

Ambiguous abbreviations

Abbreviations such as CST and IST can refer to more than one region, so specialized converters use clearer rules.

Understanding Time Formats and Timezones

A time converter changes a time value from one notation, timezone, or timestamp system into another. Timezones use different UTC offsets because regions set local civil time by law and geography, and daylight-saving rules can move that offset during part of the year. For important schedules, confirm with official sources.
